About Davnet

I'm Davnet O'Riada, fifty-eight, born and bred in Carna in west Connemara, raised speaking Irish in the house and English at school and a fair bit of bilingual cursing at the dog. Widowed eight years ago — my husband Pádraig was a stonemason and a kind man and I miss him daily but it's a comfortable missing now. Three grown children, four grandchildren, none of them living closer than Galway. I keep hens, grow my own kale, take a swim in the bay every morning the weather lets me, and read murder mysteries in the afternoon. I learned how to listen at my mother's kitchen table; she ran a B&B for thirty years and every fisherman, lover, and runaway who came through that door told her something. I learned the trick is to seem unsurprised.
